Under 15 Inter County Match

South Yorkshire finish sixth with some good individual performances

Janette Tomlins reports.

The team to represent South Yorkshire on Saturday 9th September 2006 at the Moorways Stadium, Derby was selected from League results and the under 13 multi event championships.  Due to lack of entrants in the league in certain events a plea was made to clubs to nominate athletes for these events.  However South Yorkshire had no competitors in the Boys 11-13: 75 m. hurdles B, high jump B (no competitor who had achieved the starting height).   Boys 13-15: 800m B, 1500m and the Girls 13-15 1500m B.  Four athletes declined invitations to compete, one as late as Friday morning.  I thank athletes who accepted invitations at short notice.

On the day all athletes who had accepted invitations arrived and competed to the best of their ability.  Luckily there was only one injury on the day where at the finish Abigail Bishell fell and suffered multiple grazing – after treatment she did compete in the 200 metres and won and was part of the 4 x 100 relay team.

The final result was:

1st      Warwickshire                   500 points

2nd      Derbyshire                      473 points

3rd      Lincolnshire                     438 points

4th      Nottinghamshire              399 points

5th      Humberside                     373.5 points

6th      South Yorkshire             371.5 points

7th      Leicestershire                  246 points

In the under 13 Girls section South Yorkshire were 3rd with 97.5 points with the following individual first places:

200m A                      Abugail Bishell                    28.5secs

Long Jump B             Charlotte Wignall                 4.22m

In the under 15 Girls Section South Yorkshire was 2nd with 136 points with the following individual first places:

200m A                      Carys Hall                             26.7secs

Discus B                    Claire Lebond                     24.14m

In the Boys under 13 section South Yorkshire placed 7th with 49 points with the following individual first place:

I should like to thank all the athletes, the parents who supported the team and Peter Moore who acted as Boys Team Manager.  An enjoyable day of athletics was had with a good team spirit.

Special thanks to Janette for making all the arrangements enabling our athletes to take part in this competition and acting as Girls Team Manager.  South Yorkshire have been asked to host the event next year.
